Top Tips on Mattress Care

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Beds are said to last a good ten years if kept in good shape. To make sure your beds stay in use for as long as possible I would like to share tips with you on how to care for your bed so it’s kept in great condition.

No one really reads the manufacturers manual but for your bed it is wise to do so to ensure you look after it how the manufacturer intended. In the mornings you should throw back the duvet to allow the bed to air for around 20 minutes, this will allow body moisture build up to evaporate.

It is worth purchasing a protective cover to protect the mattress from stains or a special fabric cover for those with allergies. If you get stains on the mattress use a mild detergent and warm water to tackle the stain.

This is an old piece of advice and probably one you have seen your mum do, turn over the mattress every couple of months and for the first few months turn it fairly regularly, like every week. This will help the bed upholstery fillings to settle down correctly and not be uneven on one side. Try and avoid sitting on the edge of the bed or bouncing on it.

Once a mattress is done and you are going to replace it then it is no good to anyone. It is nice to be able to help relatives and friends out but don’t give them your mattress as it won’t be hygienic and likely a health hazard, if it is no longer good for you then it isn’t good for anyone. Arrange for it to be picked up and taken care of, when you buy your new mattress; ask the store, they might be able to make arrangements to dispose of this old one.

Mattresses are designed to work with the bases so if you need a new bed it would be worth your while to purchase a new base at the same time. The bed will perform better and last longer, saving you money in the long run and giving you a much better night’s sleep.
